A little story...Wanted to share this story with you guys, and future creators: After getting out of a slump, I wanted to share this story of something I went through a few years back. Bit of a read, but thanks for sticking through it As you know, Comic-Con is arriving and as I prepare for it, I grow more and more anticipated with anxiety/joy in regards to the re-release of Last Man Standing. As long, challenging, and mind-opening the creation of LMS was, something really stuck with me. Before I had created LMS, I wanted to work for WETA Workshop. To those that don't know them, they've created props, designs, sets, costumes, and more for The Lord of the Rings, Avatar, District-9, Elysium, The Hobbit and many more films. I was obsessed and inspired with them. The creator, Richard Taylor was always a huge inspiration to me. After viewing supplements on the Extended Editions of The Lord of the Rings DVDS, I knew right there: I HAD TO WORK FOR THEM.So I al

Why are quality artists expensive? In short, because you are also paying for all of the un-paid hours those artists spent researching, studying, practicing and honing their skills. For your average professional, that's thousands of hours. That's a lot of non-paid preparation time that needs to be made up for. That, and of course freelancers have to compensate for their financial insecurity and lack of employment benefits (think of a pension, sick leave, health insurance and paid holidays). This is, in a nutshell, why professional freelance artists are so expensive.I'm just clearing this up for those people who ask for "pro-quality art" and are then surprised that they will need more than $20 to afford it.It is also for those beginning freelancers who undersell themselves dramatically because they feel they should adapt to their clients' unwillingness to pay for their hard work. I know, I'm actually guilty of having done so myself and yes I lost the majority of the clients I had by doubling my prices, but I also
Get an Art Education Without Expensive Art SchoolsAs much as I love my school, Academy of Art University, it's not necessary to attend a special art school in order to learn about art. Because of the internet, there are plenty of resources available for those who are self-motivated and eager to learn.I'll start with some of the cheapest resources, ending with more expensive ones:1. Blogs, podcasts and livestreams. Most professional artists keep blogs, and these things are free treasure troves of information. The best blogs don't only show off art, they also give tips about the business of art and introduce you to new resources. Try starting with Muddy Colors, a super informative blog run by several professional painters and sculptors: http://muddycolors.blogspot.com/ For podcasts, check out Chris Oatley's artcast: http://chrisoatley.com/category/podcasts/ Also check out the Awesome Horse Studios livestream: http://www.awesomehorsestudios.com/2. Online tutorials and videos. I basically taught myself digital painting by combini
Inspirational Journal: Why to Keep TryingThis is sort of a response to a few events that happened around dA lately. I'm not singling anyone out, I'm just expressing my thoughts and hopefully putting some positive energy back into the community. So here it is. Popularity is a big issue in the art world, as is expected. When you're popular, you get more people knowing who you are, and when more people know who you are, you have a better chance to sell your work and for higher prices. Simply because your name is well known for that thing you do.I notice alot of people out there right now racing to be the first to do something, to claim that little slice of originality to put their name on. And once that "first" has been taken...alot of artists are seeming to just drop off, back down, and say "well if I can't be first, then why bother trying? I'll never be well known as a runner up." This is just..plain wrong. The person to do something first, (whether it be creating an idea or design, or becoming liked/noticed out of a group of
Art Thief to everyoneNo surprise really as it happens to every known, good and upcoming artists out there.I am experiencing a known art thief who is also my reason for putting up the issues with trades and collaborations. This person is also rumored to have a secondary account but denies it and says the person is not her and opposite gender. They have the same grammar, style of art and same behavior. Its not enough proof I'm afraid so I can't report that to DA.This person is known to freeload art from artists and others. She never pays up her end and complains that she is busy with fifty or more commissions or life with others and also trying to do trades. If you complain she says "you'll be bumped down the list and you'll have to wait longer." After meeting the person, the person offered to do a art trade of just head shots. Apparently after meeting me she made a design off of one of mine for a friend. So the species isn't mine but the design is. She stole it and I couldn't tell much or really pay any

Sick of SteampunkEven when the designs are made by completely different people, it seems like those different individuals all somehow manage to end up looking like they're all copying the same page from the same book. A lot of people see steampunk as this edgy and cool industrial thing, but for me it got really boring really fast a long while ago. I keep seeing the same aesthetics and designs used over and over to the point where it's just become flat-out predictable to me. It's always the same shirts, suspenders, brasses, top hats, top hats, top hats, oddly-placed feathers, and cogs, cogs, cogs, cogs, cogs, cogs, cogs. Cogs. Everywhere. On every surface. Everywhere.Whenever I bothered to browse "steampunk" at all, my gaze was always met with the exact same assortments of top hats, buckles, goggles, and corsets with little to no differentiation or innovative differentiation whatsoever. I think I've honestly seen the same designs done over fifty-thousand times already.Oh. Another girl with a white-sle

Whisper It InsideYou know what I can never get enough of?Shout It Outs. Example 3: http://i39.tinypic.com/deo55y.jpg "Ah, the world-weariness and pain what can only come from the old soul of a middle school furry." ~ TikTakThese wonderfully color-coordinated windows into the very soul of DeviantArt are guaranteed to warm the cockles of my heart every time one trembles its way onto my screen. Black backgrounds, Comic Sans, and tormented critters pave the way to expressing things you previously thought you could never shout out.I pour over the deepest, darkest secrets you reveal to the world, like "I'm really skinny but I still call myself fat" and, "I secretly hate people" and, "My mom doesn't know I self-harm, unless she uses the internet" and, "Friends are useless" and, "I feel so ignore by you" and, "I'm mean to my friends" and, "Fuck you" and, "Why do people hate me??" and "I'm not Asian".They're beautiful salad
A Darker He-Man StoryI recently finished http://cdn.ifanboy.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/Masters-of-the-Universe_The-Origin-of-Skeletor_Full-665x1024.jpg. You remember that wacky, cheesy 80s animated series and the more-action-packed-but-still-kids-oriented 2002 reboot series? Yeah? Well, this isn't like either of those things. At all. In fact, I wouldn't even recommend this for small kids.Readers, this is a He-Man story telling it like the adults want it. And......it's actually done right. With the Origin of Skeletor, it may be slightly more than a glimpse with 32 pages in length, and it may have originated from some toyetic merch back in the 80s, but by jove, this is a narrative that takes a beloved 80s tale and weaves in into something that those then-80s kids want as adults.I know what you're thinking. "Oh, it's just taking something meant for kids and making it dark and gritty for the sake of appealing to a more 'grown-up' audience and it's just a mosh of souped up mindless explicit
CALLING ALL HARRY POTTER FANS!As this is probably about ten days old news, J.K. Rowling is writing a movie series based on the Harry Potter verse. It will be based on her short stories she donated to charity, and ones that are very close to her heart. They will be based on seventy years before Harry Potter was born, and focus more on the mythology of the world. As a HP fan, I am wholeheartedly excited for this and I can't wait to see how the film series comes out.Release date is rumored for 2015 to 2016. I will keep everyone up-to-date as I gather the information.Source: http://www.businessweek.com/articles/2013-09-12/j-dot-k-dot-rowling-will-pen-a-new-film-set-in-harry-potters-world
